So many questions so little time for Hue

  • Of the seven new NFL head coaches in 2016, does anybody have a tougher a signment than Hue Jackson? The Brownscoach must changethe losing culture of a once proud and succe sful team.Jackson in Clevelandis responsible for improvement and stability, and hischance Kiko Alonso Jersey for succe s will depend on whether he gets it right at quarterback. The coach put more heat on himself and reclamation project Robert Griffin IIIwhen he raved that the quarterback is healthy and ready to return to his form of 2012, when RGIIIled Washington to the playoffs and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year. But willJackson'sstarter beGriffinora top quarterback in the draft?MORE: SN's "Ideal" Mock Draft | Cleveland:NFL's scariest QB graveyardSince the re-emergence of the Browns in Cleveland in 1999, the team has one playoff appearance 14 years ago.The Browns have had nine head coaches in the past 17 years, with the last four (Eric Mangini, Pat Shurmur, Rod Chudzinski and Mike Pettine) holding a combined record of 33-79. What's worse is the quarterback graveyard that Cleveland has become, with 24 starters since 1999.Into this breach steps Jackson, who has a reputation of being a quarterback guru and offensive strategist. As the Ravens quarterback coach, he helped Joe Flacco launch his career with three playoff wins in his first two seasons. As the Bengals offensive coordinator, he directed a thriving offense as the team earned two playoff berths despitean average skill set for a starting quarterback in Andy Dalton. The Browns made a questionable investment in Griffin($6.75 million guaranteed in a two-year, $15 million deal),so the presumption is he'll be the Week 1 starter. But surely the Browns new football brain trust, including general manager Sashi Brown, chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta Andre Branch Jersey and Jackson, aren't putting all their eggs in RGIII's basket.Cleveland almost certainly will take a quarterback Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch, Connor Cook or Dak Prescott at some point in the draft. My gue s is the Browns will draft outstanding defensive back Jalen Ramsey with the second overall pick, then draft Cook or Prescott at the top of Round 2.But I recommend an alternative. The Browns should take their highest-rated quarterback likely Wentz or Goff with their first pick. When a team needs a franchise quarterback, unle s the QBs grades truly are not worthy of such a lofty spot, Mark Clayton Jersey it should draft the best guy when given the opportunity. The Browns still can find a good corner in the second round. That way, Clevelandcan find out whether (and for how long) Griffin can hold offcompetition.Adding to Jackson's challenge is the teams inexplicable lo s of last seasons two best offensive linemen and top receiver in free agency. Gone are three-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack, excellent young tackle Mitchell Schwartz and downfield threat Travis Benjamin. Because the Browns need to protect an injury-prone RGIII, allowing the offensive line to weaken and losing a receiving threat were not wise moves.Cleveland of course hopes to get back suspended starJosh Gordon, who once looked like one of the leagues better receivers. But there are no guarantees. Perhaps Jackson can coax Gordon into shedding his demons and acting like a profe sional. Gordon reuniting with his college quarterback, RGIII, would help all parties.Jackson has said he wants bigger, faster receivers Gordon and some good draft picks would deliver those goods. The problem is the Browns have so many holes to fill in the draft, they may hesitate to reach for a top wideout within their top three picks. If RGIII indeed has his mobility back, it stands to reason that hell like Jacksons scheme. The coach incorporated the zone-read on a limited basis in Cincinnati even though Dalton is not fleet of foot. Most of the top quarterbacks in the draft also can run such an offense with a mix of packages.DRAFT CENTRAL: Scouting reports, mock draft, team needs, moreMaybewinning with these Browns isan impo sible task. After all, Bill Belichick could not produce a winning record duringhis five years as head coach in Cleveland.Or perhaps the law of averages says the Brownsare due for a turnaround, with Jackson playing the role of franchise savior a la Paul Brown and Blanton Collier, their only championship pedigree coaches. So many questions; so little time for a new coach to change the fortunes of a moribund franchise.Jeff Diamond is the former president of the Titans and the former vice president/general manager of the Vikings.
